Unusually High Levels Of E. Coli Found In Waters Near Black Hawk Lake’s Denison Beach

Lake View city officials are advising residents that an unusually high amount of bacteria has been detected in the waters near on of Black Hawk Lake’s northern beaches. City Administrator, Scott Peterson, says the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recently confirmed high level of E. coli.

Bacterial testing at other areas around the lake returned with results in the norm. E. coli levels are generally influenced by warm-blooded animals and their byproducts. Peterson says it is hard to be certain of the direct cause of the recent increase, but heavy rains over the last six weeks likely played a role. He adds the recent test has been the only issue for water quality this season.

The annual Black Hawk Lake Water Carnival is this weekend, and Peterson says visitors should use a little extra caution if they plan to be in the water.

The DNR and city officials will continue to monitor lake and remove notifications when the E. coli levels have subsided.
