Two St. Anthony Employees Make 100 Great Iowa Nurses List

Two St. Anthony Regional Hospital employees have been added to the list of 100 Great Iowa Nurses. Nurse Practitioner, Deb Adams, and Registered Nurse, Verna Tiefenthaler, have been recognized for their display of concern for humanity, their meaningful contributions to their profession and their active participation in leadership and/or mentoring roles. “This distinct honor recognizes the compassionate, quality care that our team members embody here at St. Anthony,” says President and CEO, Ed Smith. “Year after year, it is a great recognition for members of our nursing staff to receive this award for their willingness to go above and beyond in this profession, to make our health care offerings meaningful and valuable to our friends and neighbors in west central Iowa,” he adds. Adams is a native of Windom, Minn. and has served at St. Anthony for a total of 25 years. She started on the medical/surgical floor working in the intensive care unit and worked her way up to director of the dialysis unit. After receiving a master of science in nursing and nurse practitioner accreditation, she returned to St. Anthony in 2015 as the director of the Chronic Care Center. She says it is a huge honor and humbling experience to receive this award. Breda native, Tiefenthaler, will mark her 60th anniversary with St. Anthony this August. She began her career in 1959 in the surgery department and has served in many different roles over the years, including: private duty (intensive care), ambulance duty, on the medical/surgical floor, in radiation/oncology and working with plastic surgeons. Today, she substitutes for nursing staff in radiation/oncology a St. Anthony Clinics as needed. Tiefenthaler says the world of medicine has truly changed, and she is blessed to have experienced so many medical wonders in her career. She is honored to be recognized at the end of her nursing career. This year’s nurses will be honored Sunday, May 6 during National Nurses Week at a reception at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines. Six other St. Anthony nurses have received this award in the past: Sandy Cayler, Pat Hogan, Darlene Rueter, Katie Towers, Cheri Theulen and Tammy Roetman.
