Training Sessions For Produce Growers Coming To Sac City And Guthrie Center This Fall

Training sessions are being made available to Iowa produce growers on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Produce Safety Rule. “A primary goal of the Produce Safety Rule is prevention of food-borne illnesses rather than responding to outbreaks,” says Iowa Secretary of Agriculture, Mike Naig. “The rule focuses on science-based minimum standards for the safe growing, harvesting, packing and holding of fruits and vegetables grown for human consumption.” From last fall through this spring, 10 training sessions on the subject were held, and now the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach are announcing the scheduling of an additional 10 courses this fall. The one-day events provide growers the information needed to be in full compliance with the law, they will learn about exemptions and receive informational resource packets that assist in development of compliance plans. The training sessions will be held in Sac City on Oct. 23 and in Guthrie Center on December 11. Both will begin at 8:30 a.m. More information and details on how to register can be found here.
