Suspect Armed With A Knife Who Led Authorities On High Speed Chase Sentenced To Prison Time

A Carroll man who was armed with a knife and led local and state authorities on a high-speed chase last month has been sentenced to prison for up to two years. The defendant, 24-year-old Joshua Andre Black, had entered written guilty pleas to two aggravated misdemeanors, domestic abuse assault while displaying a weapon and eluding at speeds over 25 miles per hour over the speed limit. In the Iowa District Court for Carroll County on Thursday, Judge Joseph McCarville handed down the sentence that also included suspension of fines, surcharges and attorney fees of more than $1,300. Black will also be required to enroll in the Iowa Domestic Abuse program. The charges stem from an incident on Nov. 30 that began with Black being armed with a knife during a domestic altercation. When authorities were notified, Black fled the scene, leading the Carroll Police Department, Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol on a high-speed chase east out of Carroll on Highway 13. Black reached speeds over 100 miles per hour as he traveled through Glidden and into Greene County, bringing their law enforcement agencies into the pursuit. Black was finally apprehended when he failed to negotiate a turn on C Avenue and drove the car into a corn field, leaving the vehicle and trying to escape from law enforcement authorities on foot.
