A Storm Lake man uses a child as a shield during a physical altercation on Monday night. The Storm Lake Police Department says the evening incident was preceded by one that morning, at approximately 8:30 a.m. Twenty-two-year-old Yasmin Terrero and 26-year-old Jiovanni Ramirez Flores had a physical fight in front of three children, seven, three and two years old. The children were not harmed in the fight and the police were not notified. That night, however, at approximately 6: 30 p.m., another fight erupted and Terrero allegedly armed herself with a kitchen knife and threatened Ramirez Flores. At that time, Ramirez Flores grabbed the seven year old and shielded himself with the child until Terrero dropped the knife. The child suffered minor injuries to the rib area, but did not require medical attention. Following the investigation by local authorities, the children were placed in protective custody with the Iowa Department of Human Services. Ramirez Flores was arrested and charged with second-offense domestic assault causing bodily injury, an aggravated misdemeanor, second-offense domestic assault, a serious misdemeanor and child endangerment causing bodily injury, a class D felony. He was booked into the Buena Vista County jail without bond. Terrero was transported to the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center and then transferred to another facility for an evaluation. Warrants are being sought for Terrero following her release.
