State Auditor Credits Tips And Expanded Prevention Efforts For Increase In Flagged Audits

The number of flagged audits in Iowa has increased over the last several years, and Auditor of State, Mary Mosiman, says there are several reasons why they are catching more misuse of taxpayer dollars. Mosiman says her office has identified more fraud than any other in Iowa’s history, and she credits the watchfulness of Iowa’s public employees and citizens for helping root out corruption.

Mosiman also credits an Iowa law expanding access to smaller cities’ financial records that went into effect in July of 2013

She says catching fraud is great, but the ideal situation would be to prevent misuse before it happens. Under Mosiman, the State Auditor’s Office is working to expand their outreach efforts to ensure as many elected officials and public employees know how to identify the signs of exploitation.

Each video is about eight minutes long and contains helpful tips for protecting taxpayer money in specific types of government entities. Sessions for city councils and agricultural extensions are already available online, and Mosiman indicated new ones for state officials, school boards and soil and water district directors should be released in the near future. A link to those videos can be found included below this story.
