State Archery Competition Expected To Draw Big Numbers Next Weekend

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is estimating that there will be nearly 1,900 students in grades four through 12 that will be taking part in the State Archery Tournament at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines on Saturday and Sunday, March 10 and 11. “We are really fortunate to have so much interest in this program and event,” says Donise Petersen, archery coordinator for the Iowa DNR. “Archery really levels the playing field, allowing students of all sizes and abilities to participate and excel,” she adds. There will be 72 teams shooting for $8,000 in scholarships and other prizes and a chance to go the nationals this spring. Tickets are available for $5 at the door and attendees can receive a $1 discount by showing their hunting or fishing license. Those 17 and under are admitted free. The tournament will also feature a hands-on expo included with the price of admission. The two-day competition is held in the Richard O. Jacobson Exhibition Center and the one-day 3-D competition will take place in the Elwell Family Food Center.
