St. Anthony Providers Urging Preventative Measures During Flu Outbreak

The recent announcement of eight more influenza deaths in Iowa, bringing this season’s total thus far to 14, is leading healthcare organizations to remind patients that it is still not too late to take precautions. St. Anthony Regional Hospital providers are saying that we are currently right in the middle of a very harsh outbreak, and they want to share some simple steps that can be taken to protect yourself and your family. First and foremost, if you have not yet received a flu vaccination, get one. Make an appointment before the end of January to ensure you are taking advantage of this number one way to protect against the flu for the remainder of the season. One very easy way to continue to protect yourself is to wash your hands. This is key to a solid preventative plan. Always wash your hands after sneezing or coughing and after coming into physical contact with other individuals. Alcohol wipes and sanitizers are plan B if you cannot wash. This next one seems like common-sense, but is usually one of the most ignored recommendations out there; stay home if you are sick. This is not only to take care of yourself and speed your own recovery, but also to protect others from your illness. And finally, practice general good-health habits. Disinfect your home after any illnesses and be sure to get enough sleep, eat nutritious foods, drink plenty of water and exercise.
