Spencer Man Pleads Guilty To Theft Charges In Carroll County District Court

A Spencer man accused of stealing a computer worth over $1,000 from the Carroll Walmart was sentenced to probation Thursday in District Court for Carroll County. Thirty-year-old Nikolas Ryan Harken originally faced one count of second-degree theft, a class D felony, but the charge was reduced to third-degree theft, an aggravated misdemeanor, after Harken reached a plea agreement with prosecutors. A two-year prison sentence was suspended, and Harken was instead placed on probation for a period of two years. He was also ordered to pay more than $1,300 in fines, surcharges, court costs and attorney fees and provide for victim restitution. The charge stems from an incident on May 24, in which Harken and 30-year-old Bryan Alan Kladstrup, also of Spencer, entered the store and took a computer without paying. Kladstrup was ordered on June 28 into the custody of the Iowa Department of Corrections for a two-year prison sentence.
