Some Iowans To See Refunds From Three Satellite Providers In Settlement With Attorney General’s Office

Some satellite television customers will be receiving refunds after a settlement was reached with the Iowa Attorney General’s Office. Three companies, First Choice Communications, a DirecTV supplier out of Mesa, Ariz., and Utah-based companies, IKONIC LLC, and Xcite Satellite have all been accused of violating the Iowa Consumer Fraud Act. One part of the settlement resulted in a total of $52,000 that will be directed to the state Consumer Education and Litigation Fund. First Choice Communications sold packages at the Iowa State Fair in 2015 and 2016 and were found to have made misrepresentations to customers, including claims the price would be lower than what was actually billed. Consumers were also told they could switch providers free of charge and they failed to supply notice of the three-day right to cancel. DirecTV has refunded $11,960 to customers as a result of these complaints. IKONIC has agreed to offer 500 Iowans free cancellations and a refund for those who have paid. They were also ordered to pay the state $8,000. Xcite, who used door-to-door sales for DirecTV and Viasat services, was paid $40,000 to the state’s Consumer Education and Litigation Fund.
