Some Farmers Still Struggling With Completing Harvest Tasks

Nearly all of the corn and soybean crops are out of the fields, but some farmers are still struggling through difficult weather conditions to complete the harvest. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture, Mike Naig, says depending on the area of the state, we have been seeing rain, snow and freezing temperatures. “Farmers have been able to harvest 91 percent of corn and 97 percent of soybeans, both of which are four days behind average,” says Naig. There were 4.8 days suitable for fieldwork in the week ending Sunday, Nov. 18. Producers in northwest and north central Iowa have 96 percent of the corn harvested for grain, while those in the southwest portion of the state have 22 percent remaining in the fields. During the past week, unseasonably cold temperatures, up to 28 degrees below normal, hampered some tasks. The northeastern third of the sate saw over three inches of snowfall, while Beaconsfield, in southwest Iowa, reported 6.5 inches of snow. The week closed out with record-breaking cold in Mason City at six degrees below zero, beating out the minus four degrees that has held the record since 1894.
