Several Iowa Educators Recognized For Incorporating Fishing Into Their Curriculum

A Logan-Magnolia High School teacher was recently recognized by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for use of a fishing pond and wetland area near the school as a central part of her curriculum. Faith Bruck received the 2018 Brass Bluegill award from the Fish Iowa! Program earlier this month. She used the newly stocked pond to create excitement about lifetime recreational activities through fishing and drew on her students’ knowledge and expertise and relied on the help of some students to aid in teaching those just learning how to fish for bluegill, bass, catfish and walleye. She joins many other educators who were also recognized for their contributions to Fish Iowa!, including: Spencer Bauer with Greene County Middle School; Megan Cook with the Sac County Conservation Board; and Greg Villegas of East Sac High School. Bauer leads a fishing club for about 100 middle school students, while Cook incorporates fishing into public events, school programs and summer camps for about 300 participants. Villegas’ P.E. fishing unit for about 150 students is well-supported by the community and connects ecology and agriculture classes.
