Senator Segebart And Representative Best Talk Civics As Graduation Requirement Bill Moves To Iowa House

The Iowa Senate voted to approve a bill that would require high school students to pass a U.S. citizenship test in order to graduate. At a recent Carroll Chamber of Commerce Legislative Forum, Senator, Mark Segebart, and House Representative, Brian Best, were both asked if they would support the bill. Segebart said the format chosen for the test may make it a little easier for students.

He added he believes that we need to have at least one semester of civics in high school.

Best said he probably couldn’t name all the amendments to the Constitution, but has never really considered making it a part of the required curriculum. He would, however, be open to talking more about the possibility.

He agrees that the lessons are needed, but he is not sure yet how he would vote. The bill passed through the Senate last week on a vote of 38 to 12, and now travels to the House of Representatives for their review.
