A local football player’s effort to raise money for cancer and honor a classmate has brought in more than $12,000. At the beginning of the 2018 season, South Central Calhoun placekicker, Zane Neubaum, wanted to show support for Jacy McAlexander, who had served as the team’s manager in previous seasons and passed away in May. Neubaum says his fundraising plan was simple from the start.

The initial goal was set at $1,000, and Neubaum had already collected more than $150 after week one. His parents, Jeffrey and Peggy, helped him collect and organize the money. Neubaum says he tried not to keep track too much during the season and was astonished when the final numbers came in over $12,000.

Neubaum kicked six field goals and 39 PATs in 2018, scoring a total of 57 points during the season. That is nearly $210 for every point he scored. The primary fundraising stage is over now that the season has ended, but Neubaum says people are still able donate.

Teams from across the state also picked up on the Titan’s effort to honor McAlexander. The West Sioux Falcons, who defeated SCC in the quarterfinals, raised nearly $500 during the game and carried McAlexander’s jersey with them on the field before the state championship game in Cedar Falls.
