The Iowa Donor Network has announced that St. Anthony Regional Hospital has gone above and beyond in promoting and educating about organ donation as well as developing and implementing breakthrough best practices. For their efforts they have been presented with the LEGACI Award for Innovation. LEGACI stands for Leadership, Education, Gratitude, Advocacy, Clinical Excellence and Innovation. Awards are given in each of those six categories to Iowa Donor Network partners who fulfill the mission of “Working Together to Transform Lives Through Organ and Tissue Donation.” “St. Anthony has always been very mindful of the tremendous impact that the gift of organ donation can have on the lives of so many others,” says Karen Timm, St. Anthony Director of Patient Services. “We are happy to be recognized for our efforts and will continue to encourage families to have a simple conversation about organ donation and to get registered.” Iowa Donor Network Spokesperson, Sarah Jaschen, says they thank everyone at St. Anthony for their advocacy and dedication. “St. Anthony is consistently looking for new and innovative ways to engage both staff and the community conversation about donation,” Jaschen says. During Donate Life Month in 2017 and 2018, St. Anthony initiated registration events, a flag-raising ceremony, gave away Inspire Iowa t-shirts and coordinated with local media to raise awareness of organ donation and its impact on our area. Even though about 70 percent of Iowa adults are registered organ donors, the need is still outpacing that number. Currently, there are more than 114,000 Americans, including over 600 Iowans, waiting for life-saving transplants. On average, 22 people in the U.S. will die every day while waiting on that list. More information and details on how to become a donor can be found through the link below.
