The dialysis department at St. Anthony Regional Hospital has received their fourth consecutive five-star rating in this year’s Medicare Dialysis Facility Compare report. Eight different tables are used to compare more than 6,500 facilities across the country in patient outcomes and treatment patterns for chronic dialysis patients. These include: quality of patient care; avoidance of hospitalizations; transfusion and bloodstream infections; dialysis adequacy; long-term catheter use and mineral and bone disorders; and patient experience of care. “We attribute the quality and professionalism of our department to our skilled staff of professionally licensed nurses,” says Lynn Riesenberg, St. Anthony Director of Dialysis. “Dialysis units are not required to employ licensed nurses for treatment, but at St. Anthony, we believe this provides our patients with the highest quality of care.” The 36-patient per day department opened in 1997, and is the only unit within a 35-mile radius. This allows patients to remain close to home while receiving treatments.
