The Storm Lake Police Department has said that after several years of not having a K-9 unit on their force, they are working to raise money to fill the void left in their operations. The department had utilized K-9s for over two decades in the past, and want to bring a full-service police dog in for their proven effectiveness in building searches, drug detection, suspect apprehension, crowd control and recovery of lost children and adults. In addition, the K-9 units are very popular public relations tools for children and adults alike. The cost of the unit is outside the normal operational budget, and the purchase, training and maintenance of the animal have always been funded through the use of seized criminal assets and the generous donations of businesses and citizens in and around Storm Lake. They are now accepting contributions to the program and have set a goal of $20,000 to acquire and train the dog and to outfit a patrol unit for K-9 use. Those wishing to contribute can contact Mark Prosser at 712-732-8010, or can send donations directly to the department by using the address included below.
