Lake View Investigates Cracks In Roads Resurfaced In 2017 Street Project

Officials in Lake View are consulting with an engineering firm to determine the cause of substantial cracking on recently completed road restorations. Portions of 9th Street, 7th Street, 5th Street and Vine Street were torn out last spring and replaced with new concrete roadways. According to City Administrator, Scott Peterson, the project was finished just over a year ago and has already started to exhibit some unanticipated problems.

The city council requested MER Engineering, the firm that managed the original project, to update the council on what they need to correct the problem and prevent additional cracks from forming. MER Engineering recommended they take samples from beneath the areas in question before moving forward. Peterson says that should occur later this week.

It is not yet clear how fixing the cracks in the more than $750,000 project will cost. Peterson says they have already approached Caliber Concrete, the Adair company that handled the original construction, to do those repairs.

Peterson indicated any work would be completed sometime next spring. He says Iowa winters are already hard on roads, and it just makes sense to wait and see if the problem persists.
