Kuemper Will Keep St. Lawrence Center Open, But Changes In Use Are Likely

The Kuemper Catholic School System Board of Education was presented with the results of a One Campus Study several months ago. Kuemper President, John Steffes, says it was THE topic of discussion at a recent board meeting.

The administrators will review the collected data and continue to research the possibilities for the future. Steffes says they learned many things through this study about the entire pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade operations. Some things, he says, were obvious, but others that were not so obvious offered opportunities to make Kuemper even better. Staff dynamics was one of those.

One of the major positives to come out of the study was their ability to create that strong and vibrant connection with their faith.

Steffes adds that a big benefit in looking at ways to get better helps them keep from making changes just to make changes, but to challenge the status quo and complacency. That, he says is dangerous. It is in their vision statement to always have continuous improvement, and they are accepting that as part of their culture. The next step for the administration is to start studying what a shift in grade locations would entail for teaching staff and schedules. These changes would not be considered for the 2018/2019 school year, but perhaps the year after. Board Chairman, Jair Mayhall, says the board appreciates all the hard work that has gone into this study. “As a system,” he adds, “our test scores are very high, our enrollment has been increasing and alumni and community involvement is spectacular. However, I think we would be remiss in our duties as a board if we did not continue to strive to see if there are any ways that we can continue to get better. That was the goal of this study, and I think that will be the result.”
