Jefferson Council Member Says There Are Many Misconceptions Surrounding The City’s Feral Cat Policy

The Jefferson City Council and Jefferson Police Department have faced criticism from across the state after recent reports that officers were euthanizing feral cats by shooting them. City officials report they have received numerous calls and complaints about the community’s policy. Councilman, Matt Wetrich, says the backlash does not come as a surprise, and he understands why some people might be troubled.

He says there are a lot of misconceptions about how the city chooses to control their feral cat population, which is an issue in many communities. Officers will make multiple attempts to identify an owner or find the animal a home when they locate a stray.

Wetrich says euthanasia is a last resort after they have explored those other options,

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is encouraging the city to adopt a trap, neuter and release program. Wetrich, who is also a naturalist, says studies show that these programs are often ineffective but indicates the city will look into it further.

Jefferson officials have since suspended the policy and are exploring additional options to house the feral cat population. The city is conducting a policy review, but it could take months before a decision is reached.
