Iowa Senate Passes Bills To Help Provide More Health Insurance Options To Iowans

Iowa’s 6th District Republican Senator, Mark Segebart, says a bill that made it through the Senate last week will provide Iowans with more healthcare options. Senate File 2349, he says, has been designed to fill gaps and provide more cost-effective health insurance plans. Segebart points out that since the Affordable Care Act (ACA) became law in 2010, insurance premiums have soared, more and more insurance companies have elected to not participate and the individual market in Iowa is “in a state of collapse.” The bill will offer an option for small businesses and sole proprietorships to join forces to purchase insurance, eliminating some restrictions on creating a Multiple Employer Welfare Arrangement (MEWA). The bill will also require the Iowa Commissioner of Insurance to create rules that align with potential changes to U.S. labor regulations. Another bill, Senate File 2329, also passed last week and would allow agricultural organizations to offer health benefit plans that would not be considered insurance under state or federal law. These then, would no longer fall under the requirements of the Affordable Care Act.
