Iowa Law Enforcement Program Supports Safe Driving Choices For Upcoming Labor Day Weekend

On the Labor Day weekend in 2017, there were 10 fatality accidents reported in Iowa, the highest number since 1995. Four of those were alcohol related. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports there were 433 crash fatalities across the U.S. in 2016, with 36 percent of those involving drunk drivers. To combat the end-of-summer, alcohol-related accidents, law enforcement agencies in Iowa and around the country will be banding together in a Special Traffic Enforcement Program (sTEP) from Friday, Aug. 17 through Monday, Sept. 3. Carroll County Sheriff, Ken Pingrey, says this is one of the longer initiatives they see throughout the year.

Officers will be especially vigilant in watching for impaired and unbelted drivers, and they are saying there will be zero tolerance for noncompliance. Pingrey says that in addition to this, however, they are asking the public to practice all different types of safe driving.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau remind everyone that it is never okay to drink and drive. If your outing includes activities where alcohol will be served, make sure you have a plan in place on how you will be getting home before you even arrive.
