Iowa DPS Says Number Of Missing Juveniles Is In Line With Historical Numbers

The Iowa Department of Public Safety (DPS) has responded to growing concerns about the large number of names appearing on the state’s Missing Person Information Clearinghouse (MPIC). Following the disappearance of 20-year-old Mollie Tibbets on July 18 near Brooklyn, social media sites have been inundated with posts referencing the list. In a statement released today (Friday), the DPS indicated the number of Iowa juveniles reported missing are in line with historical numbers. According to authorities, 4,311 juveniles, about 12 per day, were reported missing in Fiscal Year (FY) 2017. They say these cases are typically runaway situations, and the vast majority are found or returned home within 24 hours.
