Iowa Attorney General Joins Bipartisan Group In Seeking Answers From Facebook On Privacy Breaches

Iowa Attorney General, Tom Miller, has joined a bipartisan group of 37 state and territory attorneys general in a letter demanding answers from Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg about their business practices and privacy protections. “I am concerned about Facebook’s privacy policies and how they may have harmed Iowans,” Miller says. The letter raises questions about the social networking site’s mining and use of information and whether or not proper notifications were made of how personal data would be used. The attorneys want answers on what types of control Facebook had over the data that was given to developers, whether or not they performed audits or had other safeguards in place to ensure there was no misuse of that data, how many users were affected, when Facebook learned of any breach of privacy and what other third party “research” applications had access to the information. The letter states that, “Facebook apparently contends that this incident of harvesting tens of millions of profiles was not the result of a technical data breach; however, the reports allege that Facebook gave away the personal data of users who never authorized these developers to obtain it, and relied on terms of service and settings that were confusing and perhaps misleading to its users.”
