IDPH Offers Free Narcan Kits In Limited Supplies To Combat Opioid Overdoses

The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), Iowa Board of Pharmacy and Iowa Pharmacy Association are teaming up next week to sponsor a statewide Narcan Access Day. The goal of the event is to increase access to the potentially lifesaving drug to anyone concerned about opioid overdoses. Naloxone, known commercially as Narcan, is a prescription medication that is given to suspected overdose patients to counteract the harmful effects of the drug and buys time for emergency medical treatment to be administered. IDPH purchased nearly 2,000 Narcan kits using federal grand funding, and limited quantities will be available on Friday, June 29 at over 350 pharmacies in Iowa, including locations in Audubon, Carroll, Calhoun, Crawford, Greene and Guthrie Counties. Narcan kits generally costs up to $150 when purchased normally. To find a participating pharmacy near you or to learn more about naloxone, follow the links included below this story.
