Honor Society For Speech And Drama Students Could Be Coming To CHS

An honor society for students involved in speech, drama and theater could be coming to Carroll High School (CHS) in the near future. Principal, Tammie McKenzie, approached the school board seeking approval to start an arm of the International Thespian Society. The Thespians were formed in 1929 and have inducted more than 2.3 million members since that time. She says founding a troupe is a great way to recognize these students’ accomplishments and commitment.

Students are judged for induction through a point system, earning credit for acting, directing or working behind the scenes in school productions. There are some costs for the school to host a Thespian troupe. Annual fees of $95 must be paid to the organization, and students do have a one-time $35 induction charge. In addition, McKenzie says a staff member is required to lead the organization.

Students are generally not required to pay membership dues at CHS, and board members expressed concerns on the society’s costs. Superintendent, Rob Cordes, says an adviser would likely need to be compensated similarly to other student groups.

The board was not opposed to bringing the Thespians to Carroll High, but wanted more information before making a decision. They requested McKenzie determine how and when dues are paid, what it would cost for a faculty adviser and when point accumulation begins. The issue was tabled and will be readdressed at a future meeting.
