Harley Davidson Joins With CHS To Provide Hands-On Job Training To Students

Several students at Carroll High School (CHS) will be getting an opportunity to learn 21st-century skills in a hands-on environment. Becky Boes, an instructional coach at CHS, was recently approached by Harley Davidson of Carroll with a proposal to include students in internships at their business. Boes says they initially had concerns about how many students would be interested in a motorcycle-themed program.

Harley Davidson’s internship includes training and experience in finance, marketing, customer relations and much more. To start, the program would accept three students for one hour for 20 class days. These students will not receive class credit and will be giving up study hall hours to participate. Harley Davidson hopes to bump the program to six students and have it run continuously once it is established. Board member, Duane Horley, supported the idea but asked Boes why students needed to leave school grounds to be involved.

Brad Jorgensen was also in favor of working with Harley Davidson and says it could lead to even more opportunities for students.

High School Principal, Tammie McKenzie, says businesses are already showing interest in these programs.

The board indicated they will continue to support hand-on experience for students and voted unanimously to approve the agreement with Harley Davidson of Carroll. Boes indicated they will start working with the business as soon as possible.
