Grassley Says Northey Appointment Still Facing Delays

U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley on Wednesday sought unanimous consent from Senate colleagues to confirm Secretary Bill Northey as the Under Secretary of Agriculture for Farm and Foreign Agriculture Services at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. President Trump’s nomination of Northey was unanimously approved to send to the nomination of the full Senate in October of last year, but has been kept from a vote there by Senator Ted Cruz of Texas. “I am very disappointed that a highly qualified and honorable man like Bill Northey is being held up for an issue unrelated to his position,” Grassley told reporters on Wednesday. Grassley adds that he has been trying to work with Cruz on solutions to lower prices for renewable identification numbers (RIN), the compliance credits for the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS). However, he says, he is being told he needs to accept Cruz’s proposal instead. Cruz has been barring Northey’s nomination in a step to try to cap these credits at 10 cents apiece, for the benefit of oil refiners.
