Grandson Charged In June Death Of Castana Woman

The 21-year-old grandson of a woman who lived in Castana, a small community west of Ute and south of Mapleton, has been arrested and charged with her June murder. The Iowa Department of Public Safety has reported that Elliot Stowe was taken into custody on Tuesday, Nov. 20 and is being held on a $1 million cash bond for first-degree murder. The charge stems from the investigation into a June 26 call from Cheryl Stowe’s co-workers, who requested a welfare check when she did not show up for work. In their initial trip to the residence she shared with Elliot Stowe, authorities were unable to locate Cheryl. The next day, Monona County Deputies and officers with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) located a deceased female about one and half miles away from Cheryl Stowe’s home. The Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office positively identified the body as that of the missing 66-year-old woman and concluded that the cause of death was homicide. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI), Monona County Attorney General’s Office, the Iowa Attorney General’s Office, Iowa State Patrol and the Mapleton and Whiting Police Departments all assisted with the joint investigation.
