Gov. Reynolds Signs Proclamation Relaxing Rules On Agricultural Transport As Harvest Approaches

Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a proclamation today (Tuesday) allowing for the transportation of overweight and oversize loads of grain for 60 days, marking the beginning of harvest season. The order allows all vehicles carrying corn, soybeans, hay, straw, silage and stover to be overweight without a permit. This applies to agricultural vehicles traveling on Iowa highways, as long as they do not exceed 90,000 pounds, stay within 12.5 percent of the non-primary highway maximum gross weight and follow the maximum axle weight limit of 20,000 pounds. Regulations regarding freight on the interstate system will remain in effect. The proclamation lasts from Saturday, Sept. 15 to Tuesday, Nov. 13. The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) has been tasked with monitoring for compliance to ensure a safe and efficient harvest.
