Gov. Reynolds Orders Flags To Half-Staff Saturday For Burial Of U.S. Sailor Killed During Attacks On Pearl Harbor

Gov. Kim Reynolds has ordered all flags in Iowa lowered to half-staff tomorrow (Saturday) for the burial of a fallen U.S. sailor. Navy Seaman 2nd-Class, 19-year-old Bernard V. Doyle, of Red Cloud, Neb. was killed on Dec. 7. 1941 while serving on the USS Oklahoma during the Japanese attacks against Pearl Harbor. His remains were classified as non-recoverable until March of this year and returned to his family in Lake City for burial. Services will be held at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with full military honors. Flags at the State Capitol Building, the Capitol Complex and public buildings, grounds and facilities throughout the state will be at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Saturday, Oct. 13. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to lower their flags for the same length of time as a sign of respect.
