Gov. Reynolds Orders Flags To Half-Staff Saturday For Burial Of U.S. Sailor Killed At Pearl Harbor

Gov. Kim Reynolds has ordered all flags in Iowa to half-staff tomorrow (Saturday) to honor a fallen U.S. sailor. Flags will be lowered from sunrise to sunset on Dec. 1 to mark the burial of Navy Fireman First Class, Bert. E McKeeman, of Council Bluffs. McKeeman was killed in action on Dec. 7, 1941 while serving on the USS Oklahoma. The battleship capsized and sank following the Japanese attacks at Pearl Harbor. McKeeman was 25 years old at the time of his death, and his remains were recovered and accounted for on Aug. 13 of this year. His body was returned to his family in Council Bluffs for burial with full military honors. Flags will be at half-staff on the State Capitol Building, the Capitol Complex and on all public buildings, grounds and facilities throughout the state. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to participate as a sign of respect.
