Gov. Reynolds Orders Flags Lowered Saturday To Honor Recently Identified Iowa Sailor Killed At Pearl Harbor

Gov. Kim Reynolds has ordered all flags in Iowa to fly at half-staff tomorrow (Saturday), July 7 to honor a recently identified World War II sailor. Seaman First Class Leon Arickx, of Mitchell County, was killed in action on Dec. 7, 1941 when the USS Oklahoma sunk during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The 22-year-old’s remains were identified in January and returned to his family in Iowa for burial with full military honors in Osage. Flags are to be lowered from sunrise to sunset on Saturday as a sign of respect. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly flags at half-staff for the same length of time.
