Gov. Reynolds Announces New Program Designed To Make Getting Learner’s Permit Easier For Families

Gov. Kim Reynolds announced a new partnership yesterday (Friday) between the Department of Transportation (DOT) and Iowa schools to make getting a learner’s permit easier. The program, called “Skip the Trip,” uses a web-based test system that allows students to take the test required to earn their permit at participating schools. “Every Iowan should expect easy access to government services,” says Reynolds. “We know parents and caregivers have busy lives. Skip the Trip is a great example of modern access to State of Iowa services, offering families convenience, choice and control in the process.” Once a student has successfully completed the test, the student will receive a confirmation message they will need to take to driver’s license service center, along with proof of identity, to receive their permit. The DOT recently finished pilot testing with more than 20 schools, but only nine are certified at this time. There are no local schools currently participating, but officials are looking to add additional districts to the program.
