We hear a lot about local sport and academic competitions but it is rare to hear one revolving around the trades. Students from East Sac County High School, however, have brought some well-deserved attention to the competitions by bringing home a second place finish at the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Iowa’s annual Craft Championships in Des Moines. Pitted against more than 100 competitors from 18 other schools, the carpentry team had four-and-a-half hours to build a firewood shed, starting only with the materials and a blueprint. They were then judged on their accuracy in following the plans, the proper use of fasteners and tools and on safety. Ginny Shindelar, ABC’s Vice President, says they are really pleased to be able to host the high school competitions at their annual event. “The East Sac carpentry team really showcased their skills and proved that the construction industry in Iowa has a bright future,” she says. The students in Eric McCollough’s industrial arts class were presented with a Milwaukee impact drill for the school’s program.
