Driver Injured In Rear-End Collision With Pickup Tuesday Night

One person was injured in a two-vehicle accident north of Carroll on Tuesday evening. At approximately 5:23 p.m., the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office was called to the scene on U.S. Highway 71 and 140th Street. They found that a 2005 Pontiac Bonneville, driven by 19-year-old Molly Rae Staiert of Carroll, was northbound on 71, behind a pickup truck. The Ford F-350, driven by 45-year-old Douglas Gerard Gerken of Breda, was slowing to turn left onto 140th Street. Staiert reportedly failed to maintain control and slow the vehicle down in time, striking the rear of the Gerken vehicle. The impact pushed the pickup truck off the roadway and the Bonneville came to a stop in the middle of the highway. Staiert was transported to St. Anthony Regional Hospital for treatment of suspected minor injuries and Gerken was uninjured. The Bonneville was totaled and the Ford received an estimated $2,000 in damages. Staiert was cited for failure to reduce to a reasonable and proper speed and failure to maintain or use safety belts.
