Democratic Primary Candidate, Fred Hubbell, Campaigns On Promises To Fix Healthcare And Balance State Budget

Fred Hubbell, one of the Democratic candidates seeking the party’s nomination for governor, has travelled the state extensively in the weeks before the June primary to ensure voters know where he stands on the issues facing Iowans. Hubbell, a long-time businessman, says his platform is centered on people and calls them the state’s best resource.

Hubbell says one of his priorities, if elected, will be to reverse the privatization of the state’s Medicaid system. He calls that effort a disaster from the start, but is not in favor of going back to the previous arrangement.

His concerns about healthcare extend beyond Medicaid. Iowa’s new six-week abortion law was to take effect July 1, but that is now on hold after a judge agreed to block it for the time being. Hubbell opposes the bill and calls it “unconstitutional.”

Hubbell is partially in favor of Iowa’s recent tax cuts. He says some parts are good, but he is frustrated at the bill’s timing.

He adds the legislature has needed to make mid-year budget cuts to avoid overspending in the last two years and many of the benefits are going to people and companies that do not need them. Hubbell is the front-runner in the Democratic field. His opponents for the nomination include Cathy Glasson, John Norris, Andy McGuire and Ross Wilburn. The primary election is slated for tomorrow (Tuesday), June 5, and polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. statewide.
