Decent Weather Brings More Days Suitable For Fieldwork

The good weather for the majority of the past week allowed area farmers to make headway with this year’s harvest. The Iowa Crop Progress and Condition Report showed an average of 5.8 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending Sunday, Oct. 28. “We are now 49 percent of corn and 71 percent of beans harvested, which puts corn three days behind and soybeans seven days behind the five-year average,” says Iowa Secretary of Agriculture, Mike Naig. “The good weather allowed 20 percent of corn and 34 percent of soybeans to be harvested last week. We need another couple good weeks to allow farmers to continue to try and catch up after a very challenging start to harvest,” Naig says. This season’s soybean harvest is ranked at the smallest percentage completed by Oct. 28 since 2009. Moisture content of field corn is averaging 18 percent with the crop now rated 69 percent good to excellent. A full copy of the report can be found through the links included below.
