Iowans who have become scam victims and have wired money via Western Union can see some form of restitution, but they must apply by Thursday, May 31. Slightly more than 1,070 Iowans have already applied for $9.16 million in the $586 million national settlement, including one Iowa couple that lost $500,000 of their retirement savings. Victims have reported they wired money to scammers who were promising romance, international sweepstakes winnings and large inheritances from foreign countries. Scam victims who wired money between Jan. 1, 2004 through Jan. 19, 2017 are eligible to apply for relief. Victims do not need documentation, however, wire transfer receipts may help facilitate a settlement claim. Anyone filing will need to provide information about a wire transfer so a settlement administrator can verify the transaction. More information on the settlement and how to apply can be found below.
