Court Records Show Long Criminal History For Former Coon Rapids Man Charged In ISU Student-Athlete’s Murder

Court records show that Collin Daniel Richards, the 22-year-old former Coon Rapids man charged with the murder of an Iowa State University student-athlete, 22-year-old Celia Barquin Arozamena, has a history of encounters with law enforcement. Richards has faced multiple charges in Greene, Guthrie and Carroll Counties, including multiple felony counts, including intimidation with a dangerous weapon, first-degree harassment and first-degree theft all in 2015. Many of the charges were dismissed or he was sentenced to probation. In 2016, he was cited during a traffic stop in Carroll County for carrying a knife over five inches. That charge was later dismissed, and the knife was returned after Richards provided proof of ownership. He was charged that same year with third-degree theft and third-degree burglary. He was eventually sentenced to probation after reaching a plea agreement with prosecutors. Richards faced charges of criminal mischief and trespassing last year after breaking into his grandparents’ home, but those charges were also dismissed. Richards was sent to prison in 2017 after his probation was revoked for drug use and failure to participate in anger-management classes. After serving only seven months of a two-year sentence, Richards was arrested in Ames on July 2 for public intoxication, where he was reportedly living in a tent near the Coldwater Golf Course. Richards was charged with first-degree murder Tuesday morning in Story County District Court. Police allege he attacked Arozamena while she was golfing, fatally stabbing her in the upper torso, head and neck. He remains in custody on a $5 million cash-only bond.
