Coon Rapids Awarded Re-designation As One Of Iowa’s Great Places

The City of Coon Rapids has been relabeled as an Iowa Great Place. The city was one of the first locations in the state to receive the designation from the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs (IDCA) in 2005, and officials were pleased to announce Wednesday that their renewal application had been accepted. Coon Rapids was selected for its rich history which represents major historical trends in Iowa and their proximity to Whiterock Conservancy, a 5,500-acre natural resource area dedicated to public recreation and sustainable agriculture. According to IDCA Director, Chris Kramer, “The Iowa Great Places program celebrates communities with a bold vision to develop their community through innovation, place making and integration of arts, history and culture to enrich their residents’ overall quality of life.” As an Iowa Great Place, Coon Rapids will have access to professional training, technical assistance and state and local resources. They will also be able to apply for funding late this year to be used towards the community. From 2014 to 2018, grant awards averaged slightly over $200,000 each. Areas in Davenport, Decorah, Dubuque, Guttenberg, Iowa City, Coralville, Marion and Perry were also awarded the re-designation.
