Coon Rapids 4-H Club Collecting Shoes To Support Local Boy’s Fight With Leukemia

A Carroll County 4-H club is collecting new and gently used shoes in an effort to benefit a local family and their child’s fight with leukemia. The Coon Rapids Mighty Clovers will be collecting donations through Monday, Jan. 7. Sara South, whose daughter is a member, helped the club organize the fundraising effort. She says almost every type of shoe will be accepted, as long as they are in good shape.

South says the way they raise money is through a partnership with a non-profit organization that specializes in shoe drives.

Funds2Orgs goes on to ship the shoes to micro-enterprise vendors in developing countries to support their local economies. South says the club will be donating their proceeds from the fundraiser to the family of Gage Carlson, a three-year-old boy diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

The group is more than halfway to their 2,500-pair goal. They have partnered with multiple locations in Coon Rapids to serve as collection points, including: Frohlich’s Super-Valu, Hardware Hanke, CR-B Schools, the library, any Coon Rapids Church and Mohr Lumber. Donations can also be dropped off in Carroll at Anderson Shoes, Kuemper Catholic High School, Adams Elementary and the Carroll County ISU Extension and Outreach Office. Anderson Shoes is offering discounts of up to 50 percent for people who leave a pair at their store.
