Carroll Supervisors Seeking Clarification On Proposed Airport Ordinance That Could Limit Construction For Large Swath Of Carroll Area

After receiving a letter outlining a proposed increase to airspace zoning by 10,000 feet around the Carroll Airport, some members of the Carroll County Board of Supervisors met with Congressman Steve King last week. That information-gathering session has led to the drafting of a response letter to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), asking for a meeting to get more clarification on why the change would be necessary and whether or not the impact would be as far-reaching as they understand it to be. According to Supervisor Chair, Marty Danzer, enacting these new regulations would be detrimental to economic development in a pretty broad circle. Rich Ruggles says they all agreed they need to address these issues.

King was not aware of whether or not this was a blanket policy that the FAA has placed on all regional airports, or if it was specific to the Carroll Airport. One of the points that brought the supervisors to attention was when Planning and Zoning Administrator, Carl Wilburn, told them there was a bin being built about two and a half miles from the airport, but the ground was out of compliance. Danzer explains what that means.

The new ordinance is in the shape of a big stadium. Since the airport sits at the bottom of a bowl in the center of this, Ruggles, Danzer and Dean Schettler discussed how a new ordinance could create big problems for a pretty large sector of Carroll and Glidden.

Neil Bock asked about any construction or updates and repairs being done in the industrial area in the Ashworth Addition. He was told that the new ordinance would impact an area roughly from downtown Carroll to all of Glidden. If not outright denied, the construction projects could be subject to a 45-day waiting period, which could be an economic hindrance to contractors trying to turn projects in a timely manner for profit. The supervisors made some minor adjustments to the letter they will be presenting to the FAA, asking for an authority figure for the region to make arrangements to come to Carroll and discuss the available options and actions that may be done to forestall any negative impact on industry and agriculture.
