Carroll Man Accused Of Felony Willful Injury Sentenced To Probation Following Plea Deal

A Carroll man has been sentenced to a suspended five-year prison term after pleading guilty to willful injury, a class D felony. Thirty-year-old Matthew Cody Johnston entered his plea to the District Court for Carroll County in September and was sentenced Thursday. The charge stemmed from an incident early on June 25, 2017 in which Johnston seriously injured another man by kicking and punching him continually. The attack left the victim with fractures to his left eye and he was bleeding from his eye and nose. Johnston is to be committed to the custody of the Director of the Iowa Department of Correction for a term not to exceed five years, pay $750 in fines and related court costs. As part of his plea agreement with the court, Johnston’s prison term, fine and surcharge are suspended and will instead serve three years on probation with the District Department of Correctional Services.
