Carroll County Ambulance Building In Need Of New Concrete

Even though provisions have not been made to accommodate the cost in the current budget, the Carroll County Ambulance Service has requested and received bids for concrete updates. Director, Darrell Baker, explains the scope of the project.

Baker says all bids, with the exception of one, were an oranges to oranges comparison. That one bid had included a larger spacing between rebar pieces, so the cost would have been well over and above the lowest received. Baker talked with Carroll County Supervisor, Dean Schettler, about the timing on the $17,730 project.

One of the areas to be repaired includes work to remove an old wooden foundation and pouring of a slab for the storage shed behind their building on Third Street. Baker says that though the foundation is calculated here, there has been nothing planned to replace the old, degenerating steel structure.

The shed is used to store tires, lawn-care equipment and larger items. Baker says that the insurance carriers are requesting these, particularly the lawn mowers and other gasoline-powered equipment, be stored away from the garages where ambulances are parked. The lowest bid was provided by OPIE Construction and the board unanimously approved the award. They will determine where the funding will come from in a future budget amendment. The most likely plan would be to pull dollars in from the reserve fund and put it into capital improvements.
