Calhoun County Supervisors Unanimously Vote Against Recommendation For Confinement Facility Plans

Nearly 30 people were present in Rockwell City Tuesday at a meeting of the Calhoun County Board of Supervisors in opposition to the construction of a 5,000-head confinement facility near Lohrville. They presented members of the board with a petition that contained 146 signatures of other residents who are also opposed to the concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO) along with a letter from Lohrville Mayor, Donny Hobbs. The application for the proposed confinement building was submitted by Burr Oak Growers, LLC of Wisconsin. After hearing from those present, including representatives of Burr Oak Growers, the supervisors voted unanimously to make a recommendation to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) that the application be denied. They also discussed the need for Iowa’s legislators to correct flaws within the Master Matrix; the scoring system used to evaluate the suitability of site locations and the practices that will help reduce any negative implications to the environment and community. “The Master Matrix needs to get changed,” says Supervisor, Scott Jacobs. “The law may say they can legally build it there, but morally, they shouldn’t,” Jacobs adds.
