Buckle Up This Thanksgiving Weekend. Someone Will Be Grateful You Did

As we start to consider what we are thankful for in our lives, the one thing that tops the list is the health and safety of our loved ones. Local law enforcement will be joining with others across the state to help ensure Iowa families continue to have this to be grateful for in their upcoming Iowa Governor Traffic Safety Bureau’s Special Traffic Enforcement Program (sTEP) initiative. The focus will be on getting everyone to their travel destination safely through seat belt usage. The Iowa Department of Public Safety reports that whether you are driving across the country or across town, seat belt use reduces the risk of fatal injury to front seat passengers by 45 percent and the risk of moderate to serious injury by 50 percent. Research has shown that males and younger drivers, 13 to 15, are at greatest risk of being unbuckled, with 62 percent of that younger group being involved in fatality accidents because they were not belted in at the time of a crash. Eighty-one percent of people who are ejected from vehicles were killed, while only one percent of occupants wearing a seatbelt were ejected in fatal crashes. In 2017, there was a reduction in the number of Iowa fatalities over the Thanksgiving weekend, down from six to four.
