Audubon FFA Hosts Fundraiser For Mission Trip With Donkey Basketball

Students, teachers and community leaders from Audubon are planning to raise money for a FFA chapter mission trip by riding donkeys and playing basketball. It is estimated at $18,000 for eight students and two adult chaperones to travel to Port-au-Prince and Les Cayes, Haiti for eight days to build homes, volunteer with orphaned youth and share their agricultural education. Donkey basketball takes place Friday in the high school gym. Chapter President, Aaron Gust, says those who come to watch are in for quite a show.

Multiple games will be played with participants split into four categories. Teams will consist of individuals traveling to Haiti, teachers nominated by students, prominent members of the community and students who donated for the chance to play. The event is billed as being wilder than a rodeo and funnier than a circus. Grace Christensen, the chapter vice president, and Gust have some experience with riding and are not fazed by the challenge.

Doors open at 6 p.m. on Friday at the high school gym with the games starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door and can be purchased in advance for $8 from a chapter member or the school office. A silent auction will be held during the event and concessions will also be available.
