As Flu Cases Continue To Rise, Dog Owners Are Reminded To Keep An Eye On Their Canine’s Health, Too

Influenza cases across the nation show no signs of stopping, but one type of flu has received far less attention. With so many people falling ill, pet owners are concerned their canines could also get sick. Veterinarian at the Carroll Small Animal Clinic, Dr. Marcia Whited, says dogs cannot catch the human flu or vice versa.

H3N2 and H3N8 are the most common forms of canine influenza and both are highly contagious among dogs. While people cannot contract these strains, Whited says the symptoms are remarkably similar to the human flu.

And just like the human version, dog flu vaccines do exist. Neither H3N2 nor H3N8 have been reported in Iowa as of yet, but recent outbreaks in California and Ohio have caused more owners to consider immunizing their pets. Whited is not an advocate for these vaccinations, but she does make an exception in certain cases.

Dogs, just like humans, can recover from the flu without treatment. To care for your sick pet, Whited says plenty of fluids and rest are the best methods. She recommends only taking your dog to the vet when they do not show signs of improvement.
