And The Scam Calls Continue To Ring In!

Local authorities are once again warning residents of scams that continue to permeate the area. Representatives with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office say they are receiving four to five calls per week from residents who have been approached by scammers, and the victims are reporting that these are becoming increasingly more sophisticate. One local woman was told she had been overcharged for a service and that the caller just needed her payment details to refund the money. That refund, however, are never made and the account was drained. The Jefferson Police Department has received reports that community members are fielding calls from someone purporting to be with the “Geek Squad,” the name used by Best Buy’s technicians. One person reporting the scam says the caller advised her there were numerous problems with her computer and that they were contacting her to provide repair services. Luckily, the recipient of the call was suspicious and contacted the real Geek Squad to find that they do not provide that type of service. Authorities are reminding everyone that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is, that reputable businesses and organizations will not ask for payment through gift cards and legitimate organizations will be happy to allow you to verify their veracity in the way you see fit. Anyone questioning a recent contact is encouraged to reach out to local law enforcement.
